DKos Traffic Heading South

It's been a month since many Clinton supporters walked out of the Daily Kos website.  Despite all of the "Don't let the door hit you in the ass!" comments we received, there seems to have been a clear impact of traffic volume at Daily Kos.  It's down.  Significantly.

Take a  look at the past month's traffic.

Photobucket

Source: http://www.sitemeter.com/?a=stats&s= sm8dailykos&r=35

There is a weekly pattern - with the most hits midweek and fewer on the weekend; however, last week Daily Kos visits struggled to top 1 million during the middle of the week.  Pair that with evidence that these numbers might be inflated - per Patrick Ruffini - and things do not look too cheerful in Mudville, of late.

You know, I used to truly enjoy reading and posting there, but it got to the point where it was a waste of time and effort.  Not to mention that nobody likes to walk into a buzz saw for entertainment.  It just got too nasty.  I don't know if progressive political blogdom will recover from the 2008 election cycle.  Internet tools, rather than expanding organizing capacity, appear to be producing circular firing squads.

Still, I stand by my decision to leave Daily Kos along with many others.  Civility had long since gone out the window.  I regret that Daily Kos may be seen by political talking heads and advertisers as passe.  At one time it was the hottest thing out there.  No longer.

Re: This is so insulting to the real labour strugg (2.00 / 0)

Actually, the term "strike" has been used in a wide range of contexts historically - perhaps because it has a more visceral meaning.

What about student strikes of the 1960s?  They were not employees.  They did not earn wages from the schools they attended.

What about women's strikes in the 1970s?  They stopped participating in family activities, withheld their contributions, spoke out against unequal relationships.

Does a strike have to involve a factory and a labor union?

No it requires valuable work (2.00 / 1)

No one will ever pay you for your DKOS blog. Homemakers provide an actual, quantifiably valuable service to society.

Equating your "struggle" and trevails with those faced by actual unions is the insult. You were unhappy you had an unpopular opinion so you took your ball and went home rather then engaged in thoughtful discussion.

Re: No it requires valuable work (none / 0)

Travails - n. painful or arduous work (from FR travailler - to work) So, it looks like my travails are work, after all.

Re: Strike (none / 0)

Millions of young people used the word "strike" in the 1960s; yet, forty years later, you cannot bring yourself to admit its usage.

To withdraw one's contributions of labor, of participation, of writing, of studying - is a strike.

I'll cede your point about using correct terminology.  In this instance, "boycott" would be the proper term to employ.

However, I'll also tell you that it's nothing more than a quibble, and distracts from the main theme of the diary.  You know that, or at least should know that.

It would be tantamount to my taking offense to your distinctly British English spelling of "labour" on a web site predominantly dedicated to American politics.  But, no worries.  I'll let that pass.

Unpleasantness naturally arises any time a site becomes an echo chamber. Check out hillaryis44 or no quarter. There are abrasive, obnoxious people on all sides. Dkos is so yesterday... (2.00 / 6)

I agree.  I also think that DKos and it's ilk are partially responsible for the rise of many new sites.  It's the "Anti-Kos" progressive blogosphere-more fact, more fairness, less attitude, less arrogance.  I'm lovin it.  Sadly, Dkos may also be responsible for inflaming an anti-Obama anger that has risen in the Democratic ranks.  This becomes problematic when we need all Dems to defeat McCain.  I don't feel like we will likely come  back together (and it will be really tragic).

Re: DKos Traffic Heading South (2.00 / 11)

I don't quite see the "heading south" you claim--it looks like it holds steady at around 700-800,000 with occasional spikes up to 1 million. Given more time, I'd love to compare last month's site traffic to other months to get a sense of the larger trend, and to other election cycles.

But the bigger question the diary raises is: So what? None of the members care or even think about site traffic. Are you suggesting that you're taking food off Kos' table or something?

Frankly, it's a lot more peaceful now that so many of you congregate elsewhere. You've got your site, they have theirs.

It's also kind of silly to suggest that some massive exodus of Hillary supporters is responsible for the dip. There were never a huge number to begin with.

At her best, Hillary garnered about 11% of the candidate polls, and that was before the primaries. I'd have to go dig up the polls, but she was well below that in subsequent polls even before you guys left. In other words, ardent Hillary supporters have always been a small percentage of the site's membership.

I'm sorry to say, no one misses you there, and you obviously don't miss dKos. So it worked out pretty well for everyone!

All this harping about dKos is like a guy complaining non-stop about how much his ex-girlfriend sucks, yet still constantly checking up on her to see what she's doing in his absence.

Re: DKos Traffic Heading South (2.00 / 6)

Here's a few polls:
Hillary at 3% in March 2007 (back when everyone was still playing nice).

Hillary at 8% in August 2007.

Hillary at 7% on 1/3/08.

Hillary at 11% in January 2008, the first poll in which the field was narrowed to two.

You get the idea.

Also, I totally forgot that there hasn't been major primaries since the beginning of March. Site traffic spikes during elections, and drops during lulls in the primary schedule. Traffic levels now roughly the same as they were before the primary season got under way in January.

By the way, here's an Alexa site comparison for dKos, Mydd, hillaryis44 and noquarter. As you can see, the dip in dKos traffic certainly isn't reflected in a corresponding spike of pro-Hillary site traffic. Seems the Clinton Trio pretty much hold steady regardless of what happens at dKos:

Re: DKos Traffic Heading South (2.00 / 2)

Being in the ad/media biz, I can say pretty definitively that Kos is probably significantly disappointed in his nos.

They were expecting much bigger spikes in traffic, like in '04 (i.e.: this year versus '07 nos.).

For a different perspective, their audience is actually bigger than many major-market (top 50) tv stations, in terms of audience. One day, perhaps in the not-too-distant future, the 'net will command ad rates like the tv stations do now, too. But, until then, Kos will just have to settle for acting like he's a big media mogul, instead of actually being one.

Then again, if he keeps chasing eyeballs at the expense of his content going drastically downhill  (and it definitely is, no question 'bout it), he'll continue to reap what he's been sowing for the past few months, and that'll be it.

There's one difference between the blogosphere and traditional media, and that is the barrier to entry online is almost non-existent. Anyone can compete. Audience is much more fleeting, except for those with $100-million-plus budgets to  keep building their brands (a la Yahoo!, Google, etc.).

There's always going to be someone coming along with a better idea when it comes to online media.

Now, with convergence, however, it'll get quite interesting.

Maybe Kos is hoping for a buyout from someone like MSNBC? The way he talks about Olbermann--whom I think doesn't hold a candle to someone like Colbert--it makes one wonder. If Markos waits another five years, it just might happen! Who knows? After all, their politics are beginning to converge, too! Then again, MSNBC lives on in the culture established by Roger Ailes (now at Fox).

Hmmm...just sayin'....

I like that analogy, Johnny (2.00 / 1)

DailyKos is the leading political blog after Huffington Post, and is by far the easiest and best run setup for comments.  They will be just fine, especially since they are backing the winner after having backed a loser. (been to Edwards' blog lately?) Obama supporters took many a lump from the Edwards people, who dominated the rec list to an absurd dergree, given that JRE never won a primary.  Now that Edwards is gone, the choice of the Kos people is clear.  Hillary was never a factor.
MyDD will be fine, too, although I would wager a sizeable dip when Clinton concedes.

Re: DKos Traffic Heading South (none / 0)

I can honestly say I can count the amount of times I've been to DailyKos on both hands, but this diary doesn't provide enough data to really justify the findings.  How are other political blogs trending?  Is this trend because of actual dissatisfaction or simply lack of exciting primaries occurring right now?

It would be interesting to see this data for a bunch of political sites and see how they all stack up in terms of traffic trends... then you could really see if the strike that is going on is actually having an effect on traffic.

yeah, you got your white Obama supporters and your black Obama supporters.  With such great diversity and interest I can't imagine why you spend so much time here.

Its about the Primaries (2.00 / 1)

When there are contests, the traffic peaks. Wait for the numbers from the third week of April and the first week of May. The numbers will spike again. Not that it matters.

Re: DKos Traffic Heading South (2.00 / 2)

I think it is specious reasoning to say that traffic at Kos is down because of the "strike".

As one commenter pointed out, there has not been a primary for a while.  Also, this has been a long, fairly exhausting primary season.  People may just be tired.

Beyond that, I will say two thing in defense of Kos....

The focus on issues other than the primary is great... downticket races and Congressional work make for great diaries.  Learn something new ever day.

And, if something seriously over the line is said, someone usually calls out the commenter for it.  I have seen sites where Donna Brazile is referred to as "brillohead" which is so offensive as to be beyond comprehension to me, and no one says a word.

by JenKinFLA on Mon Apr 07, 2008 at 09:27:42 PM EST

And that would be as opposed to... (2.00 / 1)

...10 diaries in 24 hours about Randi Rhodes calling Clinton and Ferraro "fucking whores." Six of the first seven diaries were generally pro-Rhodes, by the way. And, as recently as yesterday, I saw a pro-Rhodes diary being posted there.

So, that's okay in your opinion?

IMHO, if there was a list of the top 10 contributors to Democratic party divisiveness this year, Markos would most certainly be on it.

His lack of even-handed moderation on his site is beyond words.

Another case in point...yesterday, I went to DKos, rec'd a diary that was calling out Obama for deception when it came to his current policies with regard to the Iraq war. The diary, itself, was reasonable, and totally worthy. Inoffensive, certainly.

I made no comments on the diary, or anywhere on Daily Kos for quite awhile. All I did was rec that diary. There were 142 comments on the diary. And, only two rec's. (Mine and one other.) A couple of hours later (around 5PM, Sunday), I returned to the blog, and my t.u./h.r. priv's were no longer there. As for the diary, it was deleted.

That's the DKos I know and remember.

Re: And that would be as opposed to... (none / 0)

Your TU privileges on dkos are directly tied to the number of comments made in the last ~2 weeks.

if you haven't commented recently it is perfectly reasonable that your privileges would expire.

I'm pretty damn sure that it had nothing to do with the alleged deleted diary.

Re: Bawbie, Please claify (2.00 / 1)

Um... OK

Trusted User status at Daily Kos is an automatic algorithm, which (as I understand it)has it's major piece as the number of comments with 2 recs made in the last x number of days.  I believe x is something around 2 weeks, maybe 20 days.

TU status is very rarely removed via explicit action by site administrators, and it will usually result in a warning or explanation.

Is that what you were looking for?

That's truly funny... (none / 0)

...since my last diary there, published a few days ago, made it to the top 100, or whatever they call it.

It was a re-post of one of the diaries I posted here on April 1st or 2nd. (Not even worth bothering to look it up, quite frankly.)

Re: That's truly funny... (none / 0)

Why is that "truly funny"?

by bawbie on Mon Apr 07, 2008 at 10:59:37 PM EST
[ Parent ]

It's funny, because... (2.00 / 1)

...I've had my T.U.H.R. priv's removed and restored there a minimum of seven or eight times in the past three months. (There are only 13 wks. +- in a three-month period. That means the priv's were taken away, intentionally, on at least a few occasions, according to your overview of blog policy--which, by the way, I originally thought was the reason why I was losing my priv's there on a few occasions, too.)

It's funny, because I've seen folks objecting to my position on something there--and I don't incite the kind of behavior that would generally qualify me for removal of priv's on a blog IMHO--and threaten to go "tell the moderator," only to have the priv's removed (within an hour) and then restored a few days later.

So, yeah, I bought into the "algorithm argument" for a few weeks, as well. But, after awhile, it became a self-fulfilling situation over at DKos, because most/many Hillary supporters were to the point where anything they wrote was being h.r.'ed/t.r.'ed, so by definition, if they didn't agree with the herd mentality over at the Big Orange, chances were more than likely that their h.r./t.r. priv's would be more and more difficult to maintain, due to the audience abuse we received as far as privilege-removal was concerned, in general.

I laugh at it now, truly. In a bittersweet manner, however, because there were many like me that had spent years "in the dialogue" there, only to be turned-on for whom we supported this year in the Primary. And, there's no other way to put it, in truly objective terms. This is what happened, no matter how folks may try to spin it otherwise.

Now, since the middle of last month, I just go over there when I feel I've got something worthwhile to post (usually something I've posted here first) which I know will stir 'em up. And, I don't even comment much, if at all, when I post my own work, either. I just let 'em rant, and I chuckle.

Re: DKos Traffic Heading South (2.00 / 3)

I came to this site because I don't want a civil war in the party. I contribute to this site and to Dkos both. I am concerned that there has been so much anger on both sides (and I know I've gotten angry myself). I also wanted to get a sense of what HRC supporters were thinking and their reasons for supporting her (it's important to listen to those who don't agree with you and is a learning experience, in and of itself).

I think it's important that there be HRC and Obama supporters on the same site and that we engage in dialogue with each other. I was dismayed by journals by Universal (and others) that were on here recently, but I think things have calmed down considerably. We will all need to come together when whomever wins and I think it's important that we do that.

Honestly, I like that this site is more integrated, if you will, then it was at the beginning of the "strike." I also think a lot of HRC people have been posting at Dkos lately. And I think that's healthy.

Re: DKos Traffic Heading South (2.00 / 1)

I've been keeping an eye on the stats on alexa.com.  The same trend is there, and it is not just because of a lull in the campaigns, because other political blogs, including mydd don't show the same trend as DailyKos does.  You can compare sights to it, there.  Also the written stats at the bottom show other sights to be growing by bigger proportions than dailykos.  DK is either going down in the bottom category or stagnant.  That isn't the same with any other place that I have checked on.

Re: DKos Traffic Heading South (2.00 / 3)

Actually, realclearpolitics.com and politico.com, two sites which also reach a mass audience, have seen declines over the last month as well. RCP tracks dKos remarkably well, while politico.com has seen an upswing in the last few days.

Re: DKos Traffic Heading South (2.00 / 1)

Did they replace them with other progressive hosts?

I have no problem if a station doesn't want to continue airing Rhodes' show, but I'm afraid it may be used as an excuse to drop liberal radio altogether.

Re: DKos Traffic Heading South (2.00 / 1)

Nope.  Crappy music and religious talk radio.  Don't know if the early morning and late afternoon shows are still on the air.  It was a huge mistake for progressive radio to further segment its market with their relentless anti-Clinton content.  If I want to hear rants about Hillary, I can tune in to Limbaugh.

According to Alexa, last I checked, MyDD was up approx. 75%-80% in traffic versus 3 and/or 6 mos. ago.

Kos, on average, was up 25%+/- versus 3 and/or 6 mos. ago.
